The Pervaya Liga was the second level of ice hockey in the Soviet Union, below the Soviet Championship League. The league was first contested during the 1947-48 season.[1]

HistoryEdit

The league was initially known as the II gruppa, a name which it held from 1947-1950, before becoming the Klass B, which it was called through the 1962-63 season.

It was once again renamed the II gruppa for 1963-64, as the Klass B became the new third-tier league. For the 1969-70, the league became the Klass A, group 1 (also called the Pervaya Liga), a name it kept until the end of the 1979-80 season.

The Pervaya Liga became its sole official name for the 1980-81 season. It was known as such until folding after the 1991-92 season due to the demise of the Soviet Union.
